What We Believe – Articles of Faith

Who and what we believe affects our character and our eternal destiny, which is why we provide a church doctrine at Praise Tabernacle Church in La Porte, Indiana. All doctrines must originate and be firmly founded upon the inspired and infallible word of God, not on the philosophies, ideas, traditions, or opinions of men.

The Scriptures

We believe and teach the Bible to be the inspired and infallible word of God in its original writings; a revelation from God to man. The Bible is the only God-given authority which man possesses; therefore, all doctrine, faith, hope, and instruction for the church must be based upon and harmonize with the Bible. (2nd Timothy 3:16, 2nd Peter 1:20-21, Psalms 119:89)

The GodHead

We believe and teach in the One, Ever –Living, Eternal God who is infinite in power, holy in His nature, attributes, and purpose. God is not a plurality; but rather the Supreme, Exclusive, Self-Existent One, who has revealed himself as Father in creation – Son in redemption – and as the Holy Ghost in regeneration.  Almighty God’s monotheism is the eternal doctrine of the Old Testament, and His incarnation as Jesus Christ is the central doctrine of the New Testament. In His humanity, Jesus Christ was a man – in His deity, He was and is God. Jesus Christ is the one true God in His totality, for All the fullness of the Godhead bodily dwells in Him. (Deut. 6:4, Matt. 1:21, 2nd Cor. 5:19, Eph. 4:6, 1st Tim. 3:16, Psalms 139:7-10, Col. 1:15-19, 1st Peter 1:20, John 1:1-18, Matt. 28:18, Rev. 1:8, Col 2:9, 1st Cor. 8:6, Is. 9:6, John 14:6-10)

Jesus Christ

We believe and teach that our Lord Jesus Christ was begotten not created.  He was born of the Virgin Mary – He lived a sinless life – He died a vicarious and atoning death on the cross for the sins of the world – He was resurrected bodily for our justification – and He ascended back to heaven where He now reigns, until all things are put under His feet. (Matt 28:1-10, Luke 1:26-30, John 3:16, 1st Peter 2:22, Heb. 10:10, Romans 5:16-18, Acts 1:1-11)

Redemption / New Birth

We believe and teach that one must be born again (experience the new birth) in order to obtain membership in The Body of Christ (His Church). Regeneration by the Holy Ghost for the salvation of the lost and sinful man is absolutely essential, and is only obtained by: (1) Repentance: godly sorrow and sincere prayer which is evidenced by confessing and forsaking of sins. Justification only comes by grace through faith in our Lord’s shed blood on Calvary. (Luke 24:47, Mark 1:15, 6:12, Acts 2:38, 3:19, Romans 3:21-24)

(2)Water Baptism: by immersion only, and administered in the Name of The Lord Jesus Christ. (Acts 2:38, 41, 8:12, 16, 38, 10:48, 16:33, 19:3-5, 22:16, Gal. 3:27, Col. 3:17)

(3) Spirit Baptism: witnessed by the initial, physical sign of speaking in other tongues as evidence. The Holy Ghost is called the Promise of The Father, The comforter, and The Spirit of Truth; and was given to bring conviction to lost souls – to empower believers and lead them unto all truth – and to administer spiritual gifts to the Church. (Acts 1:8, 2:4, 10:46, 19:6,  John 14:16-17, 15:26, 16:7-16, 1st Cor. 12)

We believe and teach the Biblical account of creation, and not the theory of evolution. (Genesis 1, Exodus 20:11, Col. 1:16-17, Heb. 1:10)

The Church

We believe and teach that The Church is the figurative / mystical Body of Christ on the earth. The many members of this “One” body comprise the “One” Church of Jesus Christ, which is the sum total of all Spirit-Filled believers everywhere. (Matt 16:18, 1st Cor. 10:16-17, 12:12-14, 27, Eph. 5:27, 30, 32, 1st Peter 2:5-10, Rom. 8:9, Heb.12:23)

The Fallibility of man

We believe and teach that man was made in the image of God in an innocent and pure state and is the crown of creation.  However; through voluntary transgression, Adam and Eve fell and were banished from the Garden of Eden. Hence; sin entered into the world. (Gen. 1:27, Gen. 3, Romans 3:23, 5:12-21)

New Covenant

We believe and teach  that upon the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the time of reformation had come; thus, initiating the fulfillment of the “old” Covenant, and the establishment of the “new” Covenant. We now have A New & Living Way which He hath consecrated for us; therefore, all of the ceremonial ritualism and the carnal ordinances contained in the Mosaic Law are no longer valid. Eternal Salvation is now available to all humanity because of Calvary’s Supreme Sacrifice. (Matt. 5:17, Luke 16:16, Rom. 7:6, 10:4, Heb. 8:6-10, 9:10-17, 10:9,10,20)

Brotherly Love

We believe and teach that “By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.” (John 13:24-35, Col. 3:12-14, Matt. 5:38-48, 1st Cor. 13, 1st John 4:7-21)

We believe and teach in a life of holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord, through sanctification; as a definite, yet progressive work of grace. Christians should cleanse themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God; for God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. We should abstain from any activity or practice which is not conducive to a godly lifestyle; for we are to live and walk in the Spirit.  (1st John 2:15-16, 1st Thess. 4:7, Heb. 12:14, 1st Peter 1:15-16, Titus 2:11-12, 1st Tim. 2:8-9, Gal. 5:16-26, Eph 4:23-32, 2nd Cor. 7:1, Col. 3:1-10)

Spiritual Gifts

We believe and teach in the operation of the gifts of the Spirit for the Empowerment, the Edification, and the Equipping of the Church today. (1st Cor. 12 and 14)

Divine Healing

We believe and teach that healing / deliverance for the spirit, mind and body is provided in the Atonement, and is available to all believers in Christ. (Heb. 13:8, Matt. 8:16-17, Mark 16:17-18, James 5:14-16, 1st Peter 2:24, 3rd John 2, Is. 53:5)

Alternative Lifestyles

We believe and teach in the highest possible standard of moral living, and that all forms of unnatural sexuality is condemned by the Holy Scriptures. Therefore; those who are involved in any immoral or deviant behavior; such as homosexuality, fornication, adultery, or such like – will be disqualified from holding any office in the Church – unless or until they have “truly” repented and experienced complete deliverance. (1st Cor. 6:9-11, Rom. 1:18-32, 2nd Tim. 3:1-5, Lev. 20:13, Matt. 19:3-9, Mark 10:11-12, Luke 16:18, Gal. 5:19-21)

The Second Coming of Christ

We believe and teach in the literal, imminent return of our Lord Jesus Christ to the earth to receive His Church unto Himself; thus, commencing the following sequence of events: the resurrection of the sainted dead and the redemption of their bodies – the Judgment Seat of Christ – the Battle of Armageddon – the Millennial Reign of Christ – the resurrection of the wicked dead – the Great White Throne Judgment – the Lake of Fire – a New Heaven & a New Earth. (1st Thess. 4:13-18, Heb. 9:28, Matt. 24:29-31, Mark 13:24-27, Luke 21:27-28, John 14:3, Acts 1:11, Rom. 14:10, 2nd Cor. 5:10, Rev. 16:16, Rev. 17:14, Rev, 19:11 thru 21:8)

Fruits of the Spirit

We believe and teach the Spirit-filled believer will produce the fruits of the Spirit in their life and their walk will be according to godliness and holy living. (1st Cor. 12:8-11; Gal 5:22-23; 1st John 2:6; 1st Peter 1:16; Tit. 2”11-13; 2nd Cor. 7:1)

We believe and teach that all will appear before the judgment seat of Christ to be judged according to the deeds done in the body. (Eccl. 12:14; 2Cor. 5:10; Rev. 20:11-15)

Moral Standards

We believe and teach in the highest possible standard of moral and holy living; therefore we do not tolerate the doctrine of Free Love, Spiritual Companionship, Social Purity, or any kindred teaching that might lead to immoral conduct.

Believers Security

We believe and teach that it is possible for those who have been enlightened, and have tasted of the good word of God to fall from their steadfastness in Christ. Therefore, the believer is secure from the judgments of God only as he maintains his fellowship with Christ. (Heb. 3:12-19, 2nd Peter 3:17)

Feet Washing

We believe and teach in the example of love, servitude and humility expressed by Christ as He washed His disciples’ feet.  Therefore, feet washing may be practiced when led by God. (Luke 22:24-27, John 13:12-15, 1st Tim. 5:10)

We believe and teach each time we partake of communion we are proclaiming the Lord’s death thus showing Him we have not forgotten His sacrifice for our sins.  We believe the breaking of the bread to symbolize and remind us of the breaking of His body for us. Also, the drinking of the fruit of the vine to be the new testament in His blood. In order to not cast a stumbling block in front of a brother or sister with a weakness to alcohol addiction, we do not partake of communion with fermented fruit of the vine. (1st Cor. 11:17-34, Luke 22:17-20, Rom 14:13-16)
